‘Souper’ start to Wanaka Winter Initiative

Things happen fast at St Columba’s – as Yvonne Walker, Food Security Project Coordinator at Wanaka Community Hub found out, when she approached Rev Damon Plimmer to ask if he could help with volunteers for an idea she had.

Yvonne’s vision? Wana Soup! Every Wednesday for 12 weeks, free soup for the community of Wanaka.

Carolyn Tregea quickly motivated, filled and souper-vised a St Columba’s roster. On June 5th, aprons at the ready, Stephanie Fieldsend and Su Hoskins kicked off the project with Thai Pumpkin soup made from fresh locally donated ingredients. Janeen Brown set up a soup station at the entrance to the hub. The ladies fed 47 people on week one, watching Yvonne’s vision come to life.

“Yum, you can tell it’s made with love,” said the first hub client who tried it on his way through.  Some found old friends and re-connected. Others were new arrivals in town from France and Argentina.

A group using a meeting room were delighted with their unexpected free lunch. One person stopped mid bike ride. Ladies on their lunch break, dashed in with keep cups and carried on. The chatter was as heartwarming as the soup.

Ask and it will be given you; search and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Painting by Peter Jackson, May 2024

St Andrew’s, the oldest stone building in Cromwell being used for its original purpose, is going to be 150 years old this year.

This, along with all the people associated, deserves celebration.

Save The Dates: 29-30 November 2024

On Friday November 29th 2024, between 4 and 6 pm we are planning to have a social time in the church and garden; drinks will be available and finger-food provided.

At 2pm on Saturday November 30th 2024, which is St Andrew’s Day, we will gather together with friends from our Parish and others, to join in celebration and thanksgiving for 150 years of worship in our Little Stone Church.

There will be an afternoon tea to follow in our adjacent hall.

If you haven’t already done so, please make contact and if you can, please provide a memory or anecdote, of your time at St Andrew's.

We look forward to hearing from you, to meeting with you, other old friends and memories in November.

Sincerely,
